Effect of extraction on smile

Objective:
The most important goal of orthodontic treatment is improvement of smile. In moderate arch length tooth size discrepancies orthodontist have to decide about extraction or non-extraction treatment. The goal of this study was comparison between extraction and non-extraction treatment effects on smile.
Methods & Materials:
30 patient s who had treated with extraction of first premolars and 30 patients who had received non-extraction treatment, with age 18-25 years were selected. Cephalometric, photographic and arch widths variables were compared between two groups by Mann-Whitney test in spss16 software.
Results:
Smile height and smile index in extraction group was less than non-extraction group (p<0.05). U1-SN mean in ext group was 100±0.8˚and less than non-extraction group u1-SN with mean of 103.3±0.9˚.there was no difference between molar, premolar and canine arch widths.
Conclusion:
It seems extraction treatment decrease smile height, smile index and inclination of maxillary incisors in comparation of non-extraction treatment.
