Effect of orthodontic treatment on oral health condition and periodontal tissue

Objective:
This well confirmed that bacterial plaque is the major factor in periodontal disease. The placement of orthodontic appliances influences plaque maturation. There are some studies for periodontal effects of orthodontic treatment.
Methods and Materials:
The PubMed data base was searched for reviews and original articles on "Orthodontic treatment and periodontal effects/Plaque/Microbiology/Histology". Only articles published between 2000 and 2011 was used.
Results:
Some studies showed the orthodontic treatment influence both microbial and clinical periodontal parameters. A few studies report attachment loss during orthodontic treatment. But, low evidence suggested the orthodontic therapy results in little effects to the periodontium.
Conclusion:
The current literature suggests that placement orthodontic appliances has increase periodontopathogenic bacteria and influences all periodontal indices. Therefore, oral hygiene for patients enduring appliance orthodontic treatment is necessary.
