Objective:
One of the complications of orthodontic treatments is external apical root resorption. Its incidence is high in orthodontic patients and 25% of them show more than 2mm resorption. So in this study we have focused on the factors of this complication.
Methods and Materials:
For finding proper articles we searched Scopus, Pubmed, Science Direct, Medline
Results:
Generally facters related to external root resorption are categorized into 4 groups: genetic factors, environmental factors, local factors and mechanical factors. In genetic factors, root resorption is more in Hispanics and Caucasian than other races and maxillary incisors and mandibular first molars have more hereditary rate than other teeth. Environmental factors include asthma, allergy, hypothyroidism, hypophisal diseases, and drugs and …. Local factors include habits, trauma history, abnormal root form, type of malocclusion, resorption before treatment,…. Mechanical factors include treatment duration, magnitude of force, type of treatment, direction of the force, extraction or non extraction and….  .
Conclusion:
Although factors related to root resorption are multiple but being aware of them can help the orthodontist to reduce root resorption during treatment.
