One of the complications in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment is allergic and toxic reactions to nickel ions released from appliances in saliva and oral cavity.
Biocompatibility of orthodontic materials used in orthodontic devices depends on the rate of dissolution of the surface coating when used in the oral cavity. Many of these devices is made of metal. Although the alloys used in orthodontic appliances are manufactured of good mechanical properties and resistance to corrosion is very good. However, different ions can be released from its surface in the acidic environment of the mouth caused by corrosion. Soluble metal ions effects on immunological system of the oral mucosa. After oral mucosa contact with nickel   some complications such as contact allergic osteomatitis, allergic plasma cells gingivitis, scarring around the mouth, lips and angular cheilitis can occur. Although some carcinogenic and mutagenic effects are reported. In this paper we review academic books and report cases to review some of these complications.
