Objective:
Most of the common complications of orthognathic surgery occur frequently enough that they must be discussed with each patient in detail. Unfortunately, it is usually impossible to predict which patients will experience a specific complication. The aim of this study was to review complications following various orthognathic surgical procedures that the orthodontist should be familiar with them.
Methods & Materials:
This is a review one and the data were collected from pubmed and published articles.
Results:
Like all surgery, complications also occur with orthognathic procedures, most of which can be prevented by thorough planning and careful surgery. In this article a brief overview of the potential complications associated with orthognathic surgery is presented for the benefit of orthodontists involved in the management of patients undergoing combined orthodontic-surgical treatment. The most frequently encountered perioperative problem in maxillary surgery is excessive blood loss, whilst subjective neurosensory disturbance is the most frequent complication in mandibular surgery. Relapse also is an unpredictable risk of orthognathic surgery. Relapse may be dental or skeletal or both. The least stable orthognathic procedure is transverse expansion of the maxilla.
Conclusion:
Good co-operation between orthodontist and surgeon is essential to prevent most immediate and late postoperative problems and nearly all unsatisfactory results.

Keywords:
