Dear Dr. Showkatbakhsh ,
Our reviewers have completed the review of your article titled, The Effect
of Tongue Appliance on the Maxilla in C1 III. They have requested minor
changes to the article, which we believe can be done rather easily. If
you’re able to submit a revised versión by July 31, there’s a good
possibility that we can run the article in the Fall issue of the
International Journal of Orthodontics. If not, we hope to be able to
schedule it for publication in the Winter issue.
Following are reviewers’ comments to help with your revision:
¨ This is a fabulous article if the Tongue Appliance does what this
article states it does. Many doctors may not be aware of this appliance. So
it is innovative and new. That is always exciting.
¨ Who developed this Tongue Appliance? Did the author of the article
develop it? If so, it should be stated. If not, then need to give credit to
the doctor who did. Also, when was it developed, and how many years has it
been used? Is there a track record on this appliance?
¨ In the Material and Method section, the author states that the
average age of the 25 patients studied was 9.94 years. What was the youngest
and the oldest age of this study group? Was it 2 years to 18 years, or 7
years to 12 years? Also would like to know if the success of this appliance
is age dependent; for instance, was it more successful in the younger age
group from 5 to 7 than those in the 12 to 15, as an example. Will this
appliance work on older teens and adults? If no, then we should be informed.
If don’t know at this time, then that should be noted.
¨ Are there any indications (i.e., ideal groups that this appliance
will work best? Are there any contraindications and precautions?
¨ Also, the mean observation time was 13 months. Is that the same as
treatment time? And please clarify that only one appliance was used and no
other appliances were used if this was the case.
¨ Author describes OPG. What is OPG; please define it. There is verbal
description of cephalometric measurements before and after treatment of
Tongue appliance. Would be great to actually show a ceph tracing showing
these landmarks such as HRL, VRL, and other important landmarks and
measurements. Would be great to show the pretreatment ceph and the post
tongue appliance ceph of the patient the author is using for this article.
Finally, does the appliance have any effect on the lower facial vertical
height? For instance, did it increase it? If so this may be duly noted. If
no change, then that should be noted.
¨ Is it correct that the exact name of this appliance is the “Tongue
appliance?” Would be great to notate in the footnote which lab or labs
fabricate this appliance and the contact information for readers who would
like to try this technique.
¨ Note for Reviewer: Appliance looks promising and I would like to try
it on my next skeletal Class III patients, but with the article as is, there
are too many questions that need to be answered before I would feel
comfortable in trying this technique.
I look forward to hearing from you regarding your plans for this article
after you’ve had a chance to review the above.
Sincerely,
Mary Byers
